To reduce the risk of bleeding and bruising for both BTA injections and Filler injections, avoid the following for two days before treatments:

  • Alcoholic Beverages
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs:
    • Generic Names: Acetylsalicylic Acid and Aspirin (Brand Names: Disprin, Ascriptin, Bayer, Bufferin, and Ecotrin).
    • Generic Name: Ibuprofen (Brand Names: Advil and Motrin).
    • Generic Name: Naproxen (Brand Names: Aleve, Anaprox and Anaprox DS, Naprosyn).
    • Generic Name: Celecoxib (Brand Name: Celebrex).
  • Vitamin E
  • Ginkgo Biloba

For filler procedures, if you have a history of oral herpes simplex, you should be pre-treated before the procedure.

What to Expect After Your Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® Procedure. Post-Treatment Instructions

  • It takes approximately 3-7 days to start seeing the results of BTA, so patience is essential. You should notice an improvement in your wrinkles and facial appearance by the end of the first week.
  • You may have skin redness around the injection sites for the first day – this is not an allergic reaction.
  • Though uncommon, you may have a small amount of bleeding from the injection sites and may develop bruising. You may also notice slight swelling that will subside by the first day. If you notice either of these, hold pressure for fifteen minutes and apply cold compresses for a few minutes.

Other important factors to remember:

  • Remain upright (no bending over or reclining) for four hours
  • Do not massage or scratch the injection site
  • Exercise the treated muscles every 15 minutes for four hours.
  • Avoid makeup for two hours after injections.
  • On the day of treatment, avoid heavy aerobic activity, hot showers/baths, and consumption of alcohol.
  • Makeup may be applied shortly after treatment unless otherwise instructed. Apply makeup gently, avoiding strenuous rubbing of the injection area.
  • The treatment area may be gently washed a few hours after treatment, avoiding aggressive scrubbing or rubbing.
  • Sunbathing or excessive UV exposure should be avoided until the redness or swelling has subsided.

What to Expect After Your Filler Procedure.

Post-Treatment Instructions

  • Depending on the filler material used, you will begin to see the results from your procedure immediately or soon after the procedure.
  • For most injectable filler products, you should notice an improvement in your wrinkles and facial appearance either by the time you leave your appointment or the end of the first week.
  • You may have skin redness around the injection sites for the first day – this is not an allergic reaction.
  • You may also notice slight swelling that will subside by the end of the first day or the next morning.
  • Though uncommon, you may have a small amount of bleeding from the injection sites and may develop bruising. If you notice this, hold pressure for fifteen minutes and apply cold compresses frequently for a couple of days.
  • Bruising, if present, should not last beyond a week and usually resolves within a few days.

Other important factors to remember include:

  • You may apply ice, as needed, for the remainder of the day to reduce swelling.  Apply for 20 minutes each hour.  A bag of frozen peas works very well.  Swelling typically subsides in the first 2-3 days.
  • To minimize bruising and swelling, avoid using: Vitamin E, Green Tea, Fish Oil, Aspirin, and Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs until all bruising and swelling have resolved.
  • On the day of treatment, avoid heavy aerobic activity, hot showers/baths, and consumption of alcohol.
  • Gently massage any nodules that may appear during the next 24 hours
  • Avoid lying on the areas injected for the two nights immediately following your treatment.  This can cause extra swelling and sensitivity and potentially displace the product that was carefully disbursed into the treatment site
  • It is normal to feel ‘firmness’ in your injection area for the first several days after treatment.  Over time, the area will soften, leaving a soft natural looking result
  • The treatment area may be gently washed a few hours after treatment, avoiding aggressive scrubbing or rubbing
  • Avoid prolonged sun or UV exposure for two weeks
  • Avoid saunas and steam baths for two weeks
  • Avoid makeup for four hours after injections
  • Immediately report any worsening or persistent symptoms or side effects.
